Decisions, Decisions...Choosing 2014 Races

The time has come, the walrus said, to put together a race calendar for 2014.

I signed up for two running challenges this year: to run 14 races in 2014, and to run a total of 2,014km throughout the year. To make sure I accomplish these goals, I need a plan. Here is what my calendar looks like so far:

January: A quiet month while I get back into the swing of things. I'm looking forward to a 5k on MLK day (the course is lined with 3 miles of drum lines!) the  Hot Chocolate 15k at the end of the month.

February: The best laid plans of mice and men, folks: I had to defer my Glass Slipper Challenge registration until 2015 (cue tears here). To make up for it, I'm running two happy races: a Tartan trot (complete with bag pipes!) early in the month, and the Taste of Athens 10k mid-month.

March: Why oh why do all the best races happen ON THE SAME WEEKEND? I don't want all that GSC training to go to waste, so I'm trying to decide between a handful of half-marathons all happening within a week of each other: a "Through the Decades" race, the Biltmore Half in Asheville, the Publix half in Atlanta, and the Locomotive half outside of ATL. I have to make the choice soon before prices go through the roof. I'm also looking forward to the Atlanta Track Club's Women's 5k at the end of the month.

April: The only race this month is the Tybee Turtle Trot 5k, run on the beach in Tybee Island.

May & June: Nothing yet. These are quiet race months in the south because it gets so warm, but I'm sure I can find some shorter races to run as we get closer.

July: I'll be running one of my favorite runs, The Peachtree Road Race, on July 4th.

August: Nothing yet.

September: I'm trying to decide between the Diva half marathon in Peachtree City and the "Back to Football" 5k the Atlanta Track Club puts on. Very different distances, but they both sound like so much fun.

October: I want to run the nighttime "Firefly" run and at the end of the month, the Atlanta Marathon. Yep, I'm taking the leap to 26.2 and I'm completely terrified and excited. I would really love to run the Goofy or Dopey Challenge in early 2015, but I feel like I need to have at least one full under my belt before I take that on.

November: I'm hoping to run Rock & Roll Savannah, Lanier Under the Lights 5k, and the 10k twilight run at Calloway Gardens.

December: Nothing on the calendar for this month yet, but I'm sure I'll be able to find a fun, holiday-themed race.

It's definitely still a work in progress, but I feel like its a good start!

A penny for your thoughts: Are you doing any challenges this year? What's the race you're most looking forward to?

  1. I forgot about the Diva...I am trying to decide if I think I can make TOT or W&D.....I would love to do another race. The Calloway twilight sounds amazing too. Too many fun races..for December I LOVE the Jingle Jog at Perimeter Mall.... I am training for the 2015 WDW Full too....which scares me, but we all have eachother. I say "just " go for the Marathon because that in and of itself is huge. I might voluntear too one day to see what that is like.

    1. I did the Jingle Jog in 2012 and loved it! I'm so undecided on the wdw big races next year...I kind of want my first marathon to be at Disney! I guess I have until April to decide. :)

  3. Good luck on the full! I'm not ready to commit to that distance yet, although WDW Full 2015 is mighty tempting. Great races, looks like a fun year!
