Bacon, Doughnuts and Bad Proms

Is it just me, or does 2014 seem to be the year of outrageously themed races?

Now, I love a good theme race as much as the next girl. I cut my teeth, after all, dressed as a princess and running through a castle. There are the perennial favorites, like the Hot Chocolate run and The Color Run--but some of the races I've come across recently are over the top.

Like the Bad Prom 5k. You dress up in your cheesiest prom attire, run through a prom-themed course, and finish off with--you guessed it--a big old prom dance party.

When I saw the course map, it made me want to pull out my ancient can of hairspray and figure out a way to run in taffeta.

Then there's the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Dare. This one is held in one of my favorite southern towns, Athens, and I have to be honest--if I wasn't running the Hot Chocolate 15K that morning, I would totally be at this race. Halfway through the 5K, you stop and eat 10 doughnuts--then head for the finish line, a little glazed over (get it? Glazed? Ah, I love run puns).

While we're on the topic of combining running and food, lets talk about this one:

This race boasts unlimited bacon bits during the run and unlimited bacon at the finish. So much for fitness, but YUM.

If you're looking for a fun challenge, how about the Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge?

It features a giant wrecking ball, jump balls, and huge inflatable water slides along the 5K course.

A penny for your thoughts: have you done a themed race? What was your favorite one?

  1. Ha ha I hear you. Theme races every where you look. This year I am running the 50th anniversary of the Calgary Marathon race. Organizers are encouraging runners to run through the ages or a theme of the last 5 decades. That should be fun! Not sure I can run in platform shoes :)

  3. I am afraid of getting hurt on these races LOL...... or sick. :-) Though it sure brings an element of fun, room for all kinds.

  4. I really enjoyed the Gladiator run. It was a mud run/obstacle course. I've done the color run, but found it kind of blah. The ROC doesn't interest me, but I'll have to see if there's a prom one in my area. That looks hilarious!
